The Konami Code

The Konami Code, (Japanese: コナミコマンド, Konami komando, "Konamicommand") is a cheat code that appears in many Konami video games, although the code also appears in some non-Konami games. The code was first used in the 1986 release of Gradius for the Nintendo Entertainment System but was popularized among North American players in the NES version of Contra, for which it was also dubbed both the "Contra Code" and "30 Lives Code". During the title screen before the game demo begins, the player could press the following sequence of buttons on the game controller to enable the cheat:

↑↑↓↓←→←→BA
[edit]The original version of the cheat code was designed for the NES controller. The exact sequence varies from game to game and has been adapted to fit the button layouts of different video game consoles, mostly the A and B buttons. For example, any code for aPlayStation controller, which uses shapes instead of letters, would use ", ", appearing even in Konami's Dance Dance Revolutionseries, input on the dance pad. In mobile phone games by Konami, they are substituted with 5 7 3 on the numerical pad, which is the goroawase pronunciation for "konami."Variations

Some games capable of the traditional Konami Code vary the button sequence slightly. Examples include Mortal Kombat 3(↑↑↓↓←→ABA), The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning (↑↑↓↓←→←→AB←←→→), Daytona USA(↑↑↓↓←→←→ABC), and AdventureQuest Worlds (↑↑↓↓←→BABA). This can be for operational reasons (e.g. if the code must be entered while the game is paused, the code might be altered to avoid hitting the unpause button), to keep powerful upgrades better concealed while still referencing Konami, or through an error in writing the code in the game. In general discussion, these codes are often referred to as Konami Code, Conami Kode or, less commonly, "Pseudo-Konami Code".

History

The code has been subsequently re-used in a large number of other games, and has found a place in popular culture as a reference to the third generation of video game consoles.
For example, entering the code is one of two standard ways to put a Palm webOS device (such as the Palm Pre or Palm Pixi) into "developer mode", and the code is also present as anEaster egg on a number of websites. The code is also used in a variation whereStart is replaced with ↑↑↑↑ for the command a PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 user must use to reset their Netflix account on the Netflix application. In the build-up to his French presidential campaign, politician François Bayrou has referenced it on his official website, where entering the Konami code would unlock a hidden 8-bit style election video.
The Konami code also appears in the animated series Gravity Falls, where the code is in the final frame of the show's intro sequence. ↑↑↓↓←→←→BASELECTSTART It appears again in the movie Wreck-It Ralph as the code King Candy uses to enter the safe where the data code for the game Sugar Rush is kept.
The code is also referenced in the anime OVA series Hellsing Ultimate when character Jan Valentine, uses the code as an indication of which way he is shooting Hellsing guards, up and down being forward and behind. He also references the company after he finishes shooting by saying, "Bringing the mother fucking death by Konami." Again the code is used in the anime "kissXsis" by Ako as a "Huge Breast Combo". Entering the Konami code on BBC's Glow Javascript library brings up a picture of Doctor Who companions Sarah Jane Smith and K-9 (Doctor Who). Entering the code again darkens the background of the webpage until it turns completely black. The Konami Code was created by Kazuhisa Hashimoto, who was developing the home portof the 1985 arcade game Gradius, a scrolling shooter released on the NES in 1986. Finding the game too difficult to play through during testing, he created a cheat code to give the player a full set of power-ups (normally attained gradually throughout the game).[2] The code was still present in the released Gradius after Kazuhisa forgot to remove it.[citation needed]Players discovered and shared the code. It has been included in the other sequels and spin-offs, including the SNES version of Gradius III, which actually destroys the player's ship upon entering the original code (however, substituting ← and → with the L and R triggers of the SNES controller powers up the ship), all the way through the most recent iteration of the series, Gradius Rebirth on the Wii, where the Wii Remote's 1 and 2 buttons fill in forA and B, respectively.
