 About the Game [*A]

¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Torneko no Daibouken Fushigi no Dungeon was released in Japan on
September 19, 1993 by ChunSoft. It has never been released anywhere else, and
it has never been remade. Will it be remade? Well, Shiren the Wanderer
(Fushigi no Dungeon 2: Fuurai no Shiren) got remade on the Nintendo DS, so
anything is possible.

Since the game was never released anywhere else, it has never been officially
translated into English. There exists a fanmade English patch for the ROM of
the game. The patch consists of very poor English and the creators made many
errors when changing the text, but it gives people a decent idea of what is
going on in the game.

The English patch can be found here:

http://www.magic-destiny.com/

This document is meant to help you play through the game even without a
translation patch. All of the dialog is shown to give you an idea of what
is being said. Like any translation, mine isn't perfect, but it still gives
you a pretty good idea of what everything is.

 Game Mechanics [*B0]

¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Torneko no Daibouken Fushigi no Dungeon is a Mysterious Dungeon game. If you've
played this type of game, then you don't need an introduction to how the game
works.

The game is turn-based, done in an RPG-style of movement. Everything is done
by "squares" that are used to hold a sprite. Sprites are used for things you
can interact with. Each square either has a sprite occupying it, or nothing in
it currently. When you take a step in the game, your sprite moves to a
different square. It's very important to understand how the systems of squares
works, because decisions you make in the game are based off of this.

Every time you do something, all enemies on the floor will take a step (unless
they are sleeping). Every time you do something, it is considered a "turn".
If you've ever played a turn-based RPG (Dragon Quest/Warrior games for
example), then you'll know how it works. Whenever you do something, the enemy
then gets to do something. You and your enemies are the only ones that get
turns. You will always get the first turn, and your enemies will always
get the next turn. Some things in the game modify how turns work temporarily,
and there are some enemies that don't follow this system.

Each dungeon has a certain number of floors you must explore. Your goal is to
get to the next floor, but you will want to fight enemies and get items along
the way. If you rush deep into the dungeon, you will be easily killed by
enemies farther into the dungeon.

Items are acquired by stepping on them. Once stepped on, they will
automatically be placed in your inventory. If your inventory is full, you
simply won't pick up the items. Traps are done in a similar way: once you step
on them, they are activated.

Saving in the game is done automatically. When you shut the game off, it will
automatically save your progress, no matter where you were. This means that
you can turn your game off in the middle of a dungeon and resume where you
left off the next time you play.

===============================================================================
 Controls [*b1]
===============================================================================

A: Attack/Confirm
B: Map with game screen (hold)/Cancel/Run (hold)
X: Menu/Confirm
Y: Cancel/Change direction while standing in place (hold)
L: Shoot arrow
R: Move diagonally (hold)
Select: Map without game screen (hold)
A + B: Recover HP fast (hold)

===============================================================================
 Interface [*b2]
===============================================================================

When you get to the title screen, you will see the following:

+-----------+
|Begin Game |
|High Scores|
|Sound |
+-----------+

If you already have a quest saved, you will see this instead:

+--------------+
|Continue |
|Begin Game |
|Copy Game |
|Erase Game |
|Rename Village|
|High Scores |
|Replay |
|Sound |
+--------------+

Here is what each of these options does:

Continue: Allows you to continue from where you left off. The second you
 turn off the game, the game will automatically save the game
 from the exact place you were in. This means that you can save
 in the middle of a dungeon. It's better to hit "End" in the
 menu, just to be safe.

Begin Game: Starts a new game. You can have up to three save files.

Copy Game: Copies an existing game file.

Erase Game: Erases and existing game file.

Rename Village: Allows you to rename a village contained in a game file.

High Scores: Allows you to see the top ten high scores. High scores are
 achieved by either dying in a dungeon or leaving one.

Replay: Allows you to see what you've previously done on the floor
 you're currently on. This only works in dungeons.

Sound: Allows you to adjust the sound setting between Stereo and Mono.

While in the dungeon, you will see several things on the top of the screen.
They will look like this:

 # Fl Lv # HP #/# #G
 |¯¯|
 ¯¯
This is what each of those means:

# Fl: Floor you're currently on (starts at floor 1 every time you enter a
 dungeon)
Lv #: Your current level (resets to one every time you enter a dungeon)
HP #/#: Current HP/Max HP
# G: Your current gold (stored in your house after you leave a dungeon)

In the menu you will have a number of options. Several statistics will also
be displayed. The menu looks like this:

+-------------------------+
|+---------+ |
||Item Map| |
||Take End| |
|+---------+ |
| |
| |
|+-----------------------+|
||Floor # Belly #%||
||Attack # Strength #/#||
||Defense # Exp. # ||
|+-----------------------+|
+-------------------------+

For the top half of the menu screen:

Item: Shows your current items
Map : Displays the map like the B button, but all of the time.
Take: Picks up a nearby item
End: Quits the game (saves your current progess)

For the bottom half of the menu screen:

Floor: Floor you're currently on
Attack: Your attack power
Defense: Your defensive power
Belly: How full you are
Strength: Your strength; more Strength means more damage
Exp.: Current amount of experience points

===============================================================================
 Replay [*b3]
===============================================================================

The Replay feature, accessed by the Replay option on the main menu, is a great
feature in the game. This will allow you to see what you previously did on the
current floor you're on. When replaying, you will not see any menus the player
cycled through; you will only see what actions they took.

There are a number of reasons why you might use this:

-You might want to see what enemies were chasing you.
-You might have dropped something and wanteto see where you left it.
-You might want to recall at how good/bad of a job you did on that floor.

One of the main reasons this was included was to probably show other people
how you did on the floor.

===============================================================================
 High Scores [*b4]
===============================================================================

To bring some competitiveness into this single-player game, the High Scores
feature was added. This keeps a list of the top ten scores made with the
cartridge. Scores are calculated with this formula:

Player's gold + (value of player's items added together) = (Score) G

Items brought into the dungeon will not count towards your score.

The score will display in this format:

1-10: (Gold) G | (Village name) village, (how far into the dungeon, and the
dungeon name), (Floor number) floor, Defeated by (enemy that killed you)
*OR* Retrieved (quest item)

===============================================================================
 Formulas [*b5]
===============================================================================

[This section isn't complete yet, as I am still experimenting with formulas.]

Chance to miss:

When someone is attacking, there is a chance they will miss their target. When
a miss occurs, the target takes no damage and a "miss" sound is played.
Nothing in the game contributes to this factor except luck. When someone is
hit for damage under one, they will take zero damage; a miss will not occur
because no damage was done (the game will say that zero damage was done).

The average chance of missing is about 10%, meaning on average you'll miss
one out of ten hits. This doesn't mean that you can't miss constantly or
never miss though, as it is possible to miss several times in a row, or never
miss for 50+ hits.

 Prologue [*C]

¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
In the world, there was the small village of Lakenaba.
There once was a man.
His name was Taloon.
He worked for Sesse at the Weapon Shop...
However, Taloon had a dream.
He wanted to start his own business, a large store.
He wanted to have the world's greatest store. This was Taloon's dream.
So he embarked on a journey.
Prince Bonmoor helped Taloon by giving him Gold and other goods.
Thanks to the prince, Taloon was able to own a shop in Endor.
Taloon called Nene and Poporo to the store.
Even the king was very pleased with the shop.
However, Taloon was restless. He heard a rumor...
He heard of the Mysterious Dungeon.
An amazing cavern, filled with fabulous treasures.
But nobody has ever returned...
Drawn by the cavern's wealth...
Taloon yearned to seek those treasures.
But he was also worried about his family, and his shop.
Taloon smiled at Nene nervously and said...
"Dear, I want to follow my dream to become a world trader."
"I want to face new challenges."
Taloon started off on his adventure, and he soon found his family behind him.
The family traveled to where Taloon would begin his adventure.
And so, the adventure begins...

 Walkthrough [*D0]

¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯

===============================================================================
 The Newcomer [*d1]
===============================================================================

Nene: At last, we've arrived!
Poporo: Oh, papa, what is this place called?
Nene: You're right - this place needs a name. Let Poporo name the village,
 dear.

You will then be prompted to pick a name for the village. The name can only
contain four characters. Once you're done, pick the option on the top-right.

Poporo: There you go. How about [town name]?
Nene: Go meet the king, dear! We'll wait here. I'll set up the shop while you
 gather merchandise. Good luck, dear!

You will then be brought to the castle where you meet the king. Throughout the
conversation with the king, you will get several Yes/No choices. Here is how
they branch out:

 <<<<<<<<<Begin>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>No
 \/ \/
 \/ >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>\/
 <<<<<<<Yes>>>>>>>> ^ \/
 \/ ^ \/ ^ <<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>
 \/ ^ \/ ^ \/ \/
 Yes <<<<<<<<No ^ \/ \/
 \/ ^ Yes <<<<<<<<No>>>>>>>>>
 \/ ^ \/ \/ ^ \/
 \/ ^ \/ \/ ^ \/
 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>^ Trial Dungeon<<<<<<Yes <<<<<<<<<No

Like usual Dragon Quest style, one answer will always lead to a dead end.
Ultimately the quickest way is to say "No" and then "Yes".

Here is how the dialog goes:

King: I hear you're opening a shop in [town name]. This will be convenient for
 the townspeople. Why have you come from Endor to [town name]? To seek
 treasure in the Mysterious Dungeon!? Well, it's true - there are many
 fabulous treasures in that cave! That's why we call it the Mysterious
 Dungeon. Nobody has ever went in there and lived to tell about it.
 Aren't you afraid of risking your life?

{Choice 1}

[Yes]

King: A wise decision. You give up too easily! Ho! Ho! Ho!

To get farther, you'll have to talk to the king again.

{Continue at Choice 2}

[No]

King: Ahh... You don't give up easily. The legends predicted that someone
 would come forward and challenge the dungeon. Alright then, let me
 explain how it works. The trick is to get the treasure back to the
 surface. There are SWARMS of enemies, so try to be sneaky as possible.
 If the monsters beat you up, they'll toss you out of the dungeon! Your
 treasures will be stripped, and you'll return to level one! The dungeon
 will always be different from the last time you entered. Do you still
 wish to try your luck?

{Continue at Choice 3}

{Choice 2}
King: What!? Do you really want to test your mettle?

[Yes]

King: Hmm. Just as I thought. You're not a man who gives up easily! Alright
 then, let me explain how it works. The trick is to get the treasure back
 to the surface. There are SWARMS of enemies, so try to be sneaky as
 possible. If the monsters beat you up, they'll toss you out of the
 dungeon! Your treasures will be stripped, and you'll return to level
 one! The dungeon will always be different from the last time you
 entered. Do you still wish to try your luck?

{Continue at Choice 3}

[No]

King: A wise decision. You give up too easily! Ho! Ho! Ho!

To get farther, you'll have to talk to the king again.

{Repeat Choice 2}

{Choice 3}

[Yes]

King: Ho! You remind me of ME when I was younger! In addition to the main
 cavern, we have a small Trial Dungeon. I seem to have lost my Jewelry
 Box on the 10th basement floor. I was sipping wine when I stumbled and
 dropped it. Then some monsters came and took it away! I have given you
 three items, Taloon. Go to the 10th floor and find my Jewelry Box, and
 then return to me. Bring it here and I'll let you tackle the Mystery
 Dungeon!

The conversation ends and you are now allowed to go to the Trial Dungeon.

[No]

King: I see. Tell me when you are ready to go!

To get farther, you'll have to talk to the king again.

{Continue at Choice 4}

[Choice 4]

King: Are you ready to leave?

[Yes]

King: Ho! You remind me of ME when I was younger! In addition to the main
 cavern, we have a small Trial Dungeon. I seem to have lost my Jewelry
 Box on the 10th basement floor. I was sipping wine when I stumbled and

[No]

Continue at No(3)}

King: I see. Tell me when you are ready to go!

To get farther, you'll have to talk to the king again.

{Repeat Choice 4}

The king gives you three items. They are a Medical Herb, Big Bread, and an
Identify Scroll.

If you want to know what the people in the castle say, read below. If not, skip
to the next section.

-Soldier: If you find a good weapon or shield in the dungeon, be sure to
 equip it. You should always be looking for better weapons and
 shields. Whether barehanded or armed, always face the enemy you are
 fighting! Don't forget to turn when attacked from the rear. You may
 equip arrows to fire ranged attacks, or fling them from your quiver.
 Use arrows against powerful foes, like Magicians.

-Guard: Let me explain how a Gold Sword +1 works. The sword's basic strength
 is 2, so a Gold Sword +1 has a strength of 3! This applies to
 shields, too! Scale Shield +2: base defense is 4, +2 makes a total
 defense of 6! Staves have a number of charges. For example,
 "Thunder Staff 6"; the 6 indicates that it contains six charges!
 Weapons and shields may be strengthened by the Bikill and Upper
 scrolls!

-Minister: Let me explain how the king's gifts can help you. I'll start with
 the "Medical Herb." It is a natural remedy for curing wounds and
 restoring HP. Use it in battle when you are about to die. Next is
 the "Big Bread." Eat this whenever you become hungry. Once you are
 starving, you will lose a single HP every step. When you are near
 death, eating Bread while your Belly is full will restore HP.
 Finally, there's the "Identify Scroll." Use it to determine the
 magical functions of staves. This scroll will also reveal magical
 properties of weapon and shields. I hope this helps you! Be sure to
 speak to the Prince and soldiers before you go. Heed their words!

-Prince: Let me tell you about some really useful items. Some herbs have
 odd properties. Using these herbs can affect your body in various
 ways. Monsters can swallow herbs, too. Be sure to read your scrolls.
 If surrounded by enemies, certain scrolls may save you from
 impending doom! Also, try to vanquish enemies by using magic staves.
 Herbs and scrolls can be used only once, but a staff contains
 several charges. That's all I know. I wish you luck!

-Elder: Hello. You're not a hero, I see. Merchants should fight like
 merchants; don't rely on brute strength. There's a type of grass
 called Blaze Herb. If brute Strength fails, face the monster hordes
 and swallow a Blaze Herb! There is also an item called Bang Scroll.
 When you are being overwhelmed by monsters in a room, READ THIS
 SCROLL! *Pant, pant, pant* Ah, can't breathe. Too tense. Anyways,
 don't forget to use your items wisely!

-Guard: Seems like adventurers are always attracted to the Mystery Dungeon!
 Listen carefully to my instructions. To move diagonally, hold down
 the R button, and then use the D-pad. To change your direction
 without moving, use the Y button and D-pad together.

-Guard: I have some words of advice for adventurers going into the
 dungeons. Holding the A and B buttons down together will quicken HP
 recovery, but will also attract monsters! There is something called
 the Miracle Key Prophecy, but unfortunately I don't know any
 details.

If you exit at the bottom of the screen, you will be in the Trial Dungeon.

===============================================================================
 Trial Dungeon [*d2]
===============================================================================

Your goal on this dungeon is to get the Jewelry Box. It spawns on the 10th
floor, but not all of the time. If it doesn't spawn, you'll have to go up to
the 9th floor, and then back down to the 10th floor. You won't be able to go
up from the 9th floor until you have the Jewelry Box.

Enemies
-------
Floor 1: Giant Slug, Slime

Floors 2-3: Giant Slug, Magician, Monjar, Slime

Floor 4: Demon Toadstool, Giant Slug, Magician, Monjar, Slime

Floor 5: Demon Toadstool, Giant Slug, Magician, Monjar, Mummy

Floors 6-7: Demon Toadstool, Demonite, Magician, Monjar, Mummy

Floor 8: Demon Toadstool, Demonite, Deranger, Magician, Mummy

Floor 9: Demon Toadstool, Demonite, Deranger, Mummy, Wyvern

Floor 10: Demon Toadstool, Deranger, Wyvern

If you die in this dungeon, the King will give you tips:

1st time:

King: Oh Taloon! You were beaten! Let me give you some advice. If you attack
 or take a step, monsters will also do the same. This will give you time
 to think instead of running away.

2nd time:

King: Oh my! Beaten again! Well, here are some more tips. You must explore
 the dungeon cautiously and prepared for anything. When you are turned
 into a flower, look for an antidote in your pack. Always face the
 monster you are attacking.

3rd time:

King: Oh, Taloon! Beaten again, eh? Well, consider this... The monsters can
 move diagonally. This is a very crucial part of moving. In some cases,
 you should retreat and counterattack diagonally, too. You should also
 manuever into a better position to be able to withstand attacks.

4th time:

King: Oh, need more advice? Fight weak foes first, and conserve your healing
 herbs. Try to restore your HP by walking around. Monsters don't
 recover HP, so return to the fight when your HP is restored.

5th time:

King: Still struggling? Here's some more advice. Monsters regenerate, so
 move onward and keep your belly full. Avoid sleeping monsters whenever
 you're weak and hungry. Increase your levels before fighting the
 Magicians.

6th time:

King: Do you know how to use your map?

7th time:

King: Oh, again!? Are you using the items you find? For example, a Return
 Herb will warp you to a safe area if you eat it when surrounded.
 Confusion herbs may be thrown at enemies, too. You'll be safe until
 their effect wears off, so use them wisely!

8th time:

King: Try your best, Taloon! I'm always here to help you! You must take
 advantage of the features in the magic staves. A Thunder Staff will
 strengthen arrows. The Expel Staff will banish enemies. The Confusion
 Staff emits a Chaos Spell. The Change Staff creates a weaker monster.
 The Identify Scroll is used to learn staves' functions. Use staves
 from a distance, but make sure to face the right direction!

9th time:

King: Good luck, Taloon! I'm always here to advise you. Poison Toadstools can
 sap your Strength! The damage you inflict will decrease. Use an
 Antidote Herb as quickly as possible. The Power Herb will raise your
 Strength for a short duration. Raising your level will make you stronger
 in battle.

10th time:

King: Wow Taloon, beaten again. I'll tell you about Elixirs and Medical Herbs.
 They restore HP, and can even increase it a little! Use these items
 when your HP is low.

On the 11th time, it will repeat from the 1st time and continue again. You will
get a different message on the 21st death.

21st time:

King: Taloon, here is my final advice. To make it to the 10th floor, you may
 need a Metal Babble Sword and a Metal Babble Shield, so take these
 items! They will help you beat the Trial Dungeon.

22nd and later times:

King: Put my sword and shield to good use! Good luck!

After you ascend from the first floor, your accompishment will be added to
the High Scores list. It will look like this:

[town name] village, Trial Dungeon, Floor 10, Returned the King's Jewelry Box.
